The three you actually see on SA roads:

• 10-cube 6×4 — municipal work, small quarries, urban delivery
• 15-cube 6×4 — general aggregate haul
• 20-cube 8×4 — big quarry and mine haul (18t legal payload)

Real fuel burn

Loaded 20-cube on Gauteng terrain averages 52–58 L/100km. Empty return leg drops to around 32 L/100km. Against a Volvo or Scania 8×4 you're paying 8–12% more in fuel — but you saved R2m on the sticker price. The maths still works.

What breaks (and what doesn't)

The Weichai WP12 engine and Fast 12-speed gearbox are bulletproof if serviced on schedule. What I see fail most:

• Electrical connectors on rough roads — R500 fix
• Air lines to the tipping ram — R1,500 fix
• Cab door seals after 3 years — cosmetic

Nothing catastrophic. The killer on any tipper — Powerstar included — is overloading. Stay legal, keep your COF, and these trucks do 800,000+ km without a major rebuild.

Resale

Powerstar tippers hold 45–55% of value at 5 years / 400,000km with service records. Not Euro-brand resale, but strong for a Chinese truck — the SA market knows Powerstar.

Verdict

For a construction, quarry or aggregate business running 1–20 tippers, Powerstar is my default recommendation. Buy Euro if you're moving high-value cargo on long routes; buy Powerstar if you're moving stone, sand or spoil around Gauteng, KZN or the Western Cape.
