Foton vs Isuzu trucks — which wins in South Africa?

Foton and Isuzu commercial trucks side by side at a South African dealership yard

TL;DR — Foton wins on price and cost per delivered kilometre. Isuzu wins on branch density and resale percentage. For metro / regional work, Foton is the smarter buy in 2026. For long-haul intercity where a breakdown in the Karoo kills your week, Isuzu's network is still worth the premium.

1. Price

Like-for-like medium commercial: Foton is 20–30% cheaper. On a 5-truck fleet, that's roughly one free truck.

2. Reliability

Modern Foton uses Cummins engines and ZF gearboxes on many models — the same tier-1 componentry Isuzu uses. Isuzu still edges Foton on cab electronics longevity, but the gap is closing every model year.

3. Parts network

Isuzu wins here. 40+ years in SA means every dorp has an Isuzu mechanic. Foton's network is centralised through CTEG in Jet Park with 48-hour dispatch nationwide — fine for metro, tighter margin for remote long-haul.

4. Resale

Isuzu holds ~55% of value at 5 years. Foton holds ~40%. But you paid 25% less to start with, so absolute rand recovered is closer than the percentage suggests.

5. Finance

Both bank-financeable through all four majors. Deposits and rates are near-identical — the banks price the truck, not the brand.

Which to buy

  • Metro courier / urban logistics: Foton
  • Regional distribution under 300km/day: Foton
  • Long-haul intercity: Isuzu
  • Owner-operator single truck: Isuzu (easier resale)
  • Fleet of 3+ trucks with in-house workshop: Foton (capital saving compounds)
