Side tipper for sale in South Africa — 2026 buyer's guide

TL;DR — Side tippers are the workhorse of the SA aggregate, coal and chrome haul market. New 40-cube trailers land R650k–R950k, a full interlink (horse + trailers) is R2.6m–R3.4m. Powerstar VX 2642 is my most-quoted horse for this work. Finance and Section 12C both apply.
If you're moving aggregate, coal, chrome or clinker in South Africa, you're almost certainly running side tippers. There's a reason they've beaten end tippers on long-haul: they tip in the road reserve, they don't need overhead clearance, and drivers unload a full 34-ton payload in under 90 seconds without leaving the seat.

The spread depends on axle brand (BPW vs Chinese), tarp system (manual vs pneumatic), and whether you're spec'ing lift axles or air suspension. My honest advice: pay up for BPW axles and pneumatic tarps. Cheap axles kill your resale.
Which horse should you pair with it?
For 34-ton payload interlink on tar, three horses dominate SA: Powerstar VX 2642 (my most-quoted), FAW 33.420 and Foton Auman. All three run 420hp Cummins or Weichai drivelines, ZF or Fast gearboxes, and 500,000+ km lives with disciplined servicing.

Used side tipper — what to check
- Axle and suspension bushings (biggest hidden cost)
- Chassis cracks around the fifth wheel and king pin
- Tarp roller condition — replacement is R25k+
- Full service records — banks won't finance without them
- COF (Certificate of Fitness) valid, not just promised
Finance and tax
Trailers finance separately from horses in SA. All four big banks (WesBank, Standard, Absa, Nedbank) do 48–60 month deals at 15–20% deposit. Trailers hold their value better than trucks — banks lend more freely against them.
On tax: Section 12C gives you 40% wear-and-tear year 1, then 20% for years 2–4. Finance interest is fully deductible.
