Fuel and wages are brand-blind. The gap is ownership recovery — how much capital each machine has to earn back per hour.

The four things that make up true cost per hour
Cost per hour on heavy equipment isn't the finance instalment divided by hours worked. It's four separate things stacked on top of each other. Miss any one of them and you're quoting jobs blind.
- Fuel burn — litres per hour × delivered bulk diesel price. Brand-blind. A 160HP dozer burns 18–22 l/hr whether it's Shantui or Cat.
- Operator — wage + provident + safety kit + subsistence, divided by productive hours. Also brand-blind.
- Wear & service — filters, oils, greases, GET (ground engaging tools), undercarriage or tyres, pro-rated per hour. Slightly cheaper on Chinese equipment (parts price), same interval.
- Ownership recovery — (purchase price − expected residual + finance interest) ÷ lifetime billable hours. This is where the brands diverge — hard.
Bulldozer — Shantui SD16 vs Cat D6
Assumptions: 160HP class, 1,800 hrs/year, 10,000-hour life, bulk diesel R22.50/l, operator R95/hr all-in.

TLB (backhoe loader) — the smallest cost per hour
TLBs are the lightest fuel burn on this list (8–11 l/hr) and the cheapest capital. That's why they're the SA contractor's default first machine.

Where the numbers break down
Two scenarios move these figures fast:
- Low utilisation. Drop from 1,800 to 900 productive hours a year and ownership recovery per hour doubles. This is why marginal-use machines belong on rental or a full-maintenance lease, not on your balance sheet.
- Downtime. If a machine sits waiting for a part, the finance instalment, insurance and operator wage keep running. A 3-day parts wait on a R1,000/hr excavator at 10 hrs/day = R30,000 of dead cost — the entire savings on a cheap filter, wiped out.
My honest take
On fuel and wages, everyone's equal. On wear parts, Chinese equipment is 15–25% cheaper. On ownership recovery — the biggest single line — Shantui runs at roughly half the premium-brand cost per hour, and that's what carries the total number down.
For jobs priced on tender rate cards, cost per hour is your true breakeven. Get it wrong by R200/hr on a 1,800-hour year and you've lost R360,000 in margin per machine, per year. Get it right and every hour a Shantui runs against a Cat contract rate is R250–R300 of extra gross profit into your business.
